Fantasy Books

The books described below are not what a die hard David Edding or Terry Brooks reader would consider fantasy but are none the less not normal fiction. The stories are all about animals that have the personality traits of people.

The Duncton Series

This is a very long series of six volumes that recounts the trials and tribulations of the mole population in England. The novel is primarily set around England's great stone circles (Avebury, Rollright, Stonehenge). The language in these books is what an English teacher would call 'beautiful' or 'wonderful'. The first 3 books are the best of the series. However, all of them are very good books. Written by William Horwood.

Watership Down

This book recounts the story of a party of rabbits who escape from their home warren to find a new place to settle. They must face many trials before finally being able to settle down. An interesting thing about this book is that the author first told the story to his children to pass the time on a long car journey. Written by Richard Adams.

The Shannara Series

The two Shannara series recount an epic tale in a world of fantasy. Terry Brooks does a magnificent job of creating an entire world in living colour. After a nuclear holocaust mankind has divided into four races, trolls adapted for life on the surface, gnomes adapted for life underground and normal humans who moved to other parts. Also present are the elves creatures of magic that have survive the nuclear holocaust. (To be continued.....)

The Magic Kingdom of Landover

The magic kingdom of landover is a magic land with a twist. Ben, the hero of the tales, is a heart-broken lawyer who has suffered the tragic loss of his wife and child in a car crash. After seeing an add in a catalogue he buys the rights to be king of the magic kingdom of landover. The magic kingdom of landover is a magic land with a twist the court wizard can never find the right spell at the right time, the court scribe has been turned into a talking dog with hands and the king's champion, the Paladin, hasn't been seen for 20 years.... So begin these very well written books. They are a good series of light-hearted, humourous tales written by Terry Brooks.
